Lightning Arrester Installation

Protect Your Property from Lightning Strikes with Safeone Earthing LLP

Lightning strikes can cause severe damage to buildings, electrical equipment, communication systems, and human life. A professionally designed Lightning Protection System (LPS) provides a safe path for lightning current to dissipate into the ground, protecting your valuable assets and ensuring safety.

A properly installed lightning protection system safely carries lightning current from the top of the building into the ground, protecting the structure, equipment, and occupants.

Lightning Arrester Installation Steps

1. Site Survey

  • Inspect the building height, roof layout, and nearby structures.
  • Identify the highest points requiring protection.
  • Determine the number and locations of lightning arresters if you want to install conventional earthing
  • for early steamer lightning arrester (ESE) complete area to be calculated and then to select appropriate covering radius of early streamer

2. Design the Protection System

  • Select the appropriate lightning arrester based on the building type and applicable standards.
  • Plan the protection zone.
  • Design the shortest and straightest route for down conductors.
  • Design the earthing system to achieve the required earth resistance.

3. Install the Air Terminal (Lightning Arrester)

  • Fix the lightning arrester firmly on the highest point of the structure.
  • Use a strong mounting bracket or mast.
  • Ensure the arrester is perfectly vertical and securely fastened.

4. Install the Down Conductor

  • Connect the lightning arrester to the earthing system using copper or GI conductor.
  • Route the conductor as straight as possible.
  • Avoid sharp bends (use smooth bends with a large radius).
  • Secure the conductor with suitable clamps at regular intervals.

5. Install the Earthing System

  • Install dedicated earth electrodes (chemical or conventional earthing as per design).
  • Connect the down conductor to the earth electrode using approved clamps
  • Test Link to be provided for Testing of earth pits and LA in feuture
  • Provide an inspection chamber for future testing.

6. Install Test Link (Disconnecting Joint)

  • Provide a test link near ground level.
  • This allows periodic earth resistance testing without dismantling the system.

7. Testing and Commissioning

  • Measure earth resistance using an earth resistance tester.
  • Check continuity of the down conductor.
  • Verify all mechanical connections are tight and corrosion-free.
  • Ensure the complete system complies with the design.

8. Documentation

  • Record:
    • Earth resistance values
    • Continuity test results
    • Installation drawings
    • Inspection checklist
    • Photographs of the completed installation

9. Periodic Maintenance

  • Inspect the system every 6–12 months.
  • Test earth resistance annually or after major lightning events.
  • Tighten loose connections.
  • Replace corroded clamps or damaged conductors.
  • Keep earth pits accessible for inspection and testin
